Whew! It's been a busy couple of weeks for me and I'm sorry for not blogging!! It started a couple of weeks ago when Taylor and I headed down to Nashville for the weekend of the 9th to attend the wedding of our friends. In fact, and I don't mean to brag, I actually introduced the happy couple! That's right, my friend, Helen, married Taylor's friend Jim (whom I knew through Taylor at the time) at a bar our senior year of college. Well they through a fantastic wedding and reception in Nashville and it was so much fun to go down there and see all our college friends (on both sides of the relationship...mine and his).
THEN...no sooner did I get back on Sunday then I left again Thursday night (after a brief, but very enjoyable Valentine's dinner with Taylor) for a weekend in Miami!! Some of my best friends from Nashville met up down in Miami where our friend Brittany is a teacher for a weekend of fun in the sun. I guess the real purpose of the trip was to run a half marathon on Sunday morning in Ft. Lauderdale. Brittany and I were running and our friends Kim and Candace came down to cheer us on. It was a delightful surprise though that the weather was gorgeous (80 and sunny) every day and we had time to lay out on the beach and go out at night without a winter coat (a nice switch from New York!).
The race was a lot of fun, although I didn't get quite as good of a time as I would have liked. Currently, my half marathon times (in order of when I did them) are:
1:57:54
1:55:48
1:55:53
1:58:33
and now this one was 1:56:19. Not awful, because it certainly wasn't my worst, but I had really felt like it might be my best. The course was really flat and it was a beautiful route along the beach in Ft. Lauderdale, but some pain in my toes (cause...of all things...by a dreadful parking experience the day before that left my toes a little blistered) and some pretty insane wind in the last 2 miles really slowed me down. Not to mention they hadn't really marked the 13 mile marker...which is key when you have to do 13.
1...oh well...it was still fun. I have to say my biggest complaint is that because the race had a marathon and a half marathon component, they had to start it SUPER early to look out for the marathoners who would be out into the late morning in the Florida sun. The race actually started at 6am!!!! Yeah....so after running 13.1 before 8am, we hit the beach and proceeded to go out the next night until 3:15am. THEN, I had to get up at 5:45am to catch a plane back to New York. So my 26 or so hours looked like this:
4:45am Sunday - wake up
6:00 - 8:00am - 13.1 miles
8:00-10:am - cheer for other runners
10:00am-12:00pm - eat!
12:00pm-3:00pm - beach
3:00pm-6:00pm - rest, shower, get ready for the evening
6:00pm-3:00am - OUT in Ft. Lauderdale (many beers, but also a lot of water was consumed, resulting in surprisingly little headache/hangover)
3:15-5:45am Monday - sleep
5:45am - UP again for a 7:10am flight to New York
Yeah...so needless to say I was a smidge tired (read: completely out of it!) on Monday when I arrived home and spent most of the day sleeping at Taylor's house. In fact, I was so out of it (and had no voice from being out the night before) that I decided to stay home from work on Tuesday to recover. I called in Tuesday morning and then proceeded to get sicker as the day progressed on Tuesday! WHAT? So here I am Thursday night, finally getting over a little cold and hoping to go for a run in the morning.
But New York is supposed to get 2-4 inches of snow in the next 36 hours so that might not happen....welcome back from Vacation, I suppose!!!
